Tragic! Two Women Die In Tamil Nadu Building Collapse Amid Heavy Rain

Tamil Nadu building collapse claimed the lives of two women in Cuddalore on Wednesday, as heavy rainfall continued to lash several districts under the influence of a well-marked low-pressure area over the southwest Bay of Bengal. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that the weather system is expected to intensify further into a depression within the next 12 hours, heightening rainfall and flood risks across Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.

System Strengthens Over Bay of Bengal

According to the Regional Meteorological Department, the low-pressure area that was earlier moving northwest off Sri Lanka’s northern coast is now positioned near the Tamil Nadu shoreline. The IMD said the system is likely to move inland across northern Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and southern Andhra Pradesh by Thursday morning, accompanied by strong winds and extremely heavy downpours.

Officials have issued red alerts for Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Mayiladuthurai, and Cuddalore districts, while adjacent regions such as Chennai, Kanchipuram, and Tiruvallur remain under an orange alert. Coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh, including Nellore and Tirupati, have also been put on high alert.

Heavy Rains Lash Tamil Nadu

The latest rainfall statistics reveal a widespread deluge across the state.
Between 8:30 am Tuesday and 5:30 am Wednesday, Cuddalore recorded the highest rainfall at 174 mm, followed by Puducherry (147 mm) and Nungambakkam, Chennai (86.4 mm).

Other significant readings include:

  • Tondi: 65 mm
  • Pamban: 63 mm
  • Meenambakkam: 52.5 mm
  • Karaikal: 43 mm
  • Nagapattinam: 42 mm

The IMD forecast warns of extremely heavy rainfall in isolated areas of both Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh as the weather disturbance intensifies. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea, given the rough conditions and strong surface winds.

Cuddalore Tragedy Amid Torrential Rains

Authorities confirmed that the Cuddalore building collapse occurred early Wednesday morning, claiming the lives of two women who were trapped under debris. Local police and disaster response teams conducted immediate rescue operations amid heavy downpour conditions.

Preliminary reports suggest that the old structure, weakened by sustained rain, caved in suddenly. Officials are conducting safety checks in surrounding areas to prevent further mishaps as flooding continues to worsen.

The state’s disaster management department has deployed additional personnel and equipment in vulnerable zones across Cuddalore and Villupuram.

Government’s Response and Preparedness

Chief Minister MK Stalin chaired an emergency review meeting on Wednesday with ministers and senior bureaucrats to coordinate flood relief and emergency response operations. The CM emphasized preventive evacuation in low-lying regions and ordered district collectors to remain on high alert.

Deputy CM Udhayanidhi Stalin conducted on-ground inspections across Chennai to monitor waterlogging, drainage, and disaster readiness.

“All precautionary measures are being taken. Our focus is to ensure zero casualties and minimize property loss,” MK Stalin said during the briefing.

The Chennai District Collector, Rashmi Siddharth Jagade, announced that all schools in Chennai would remain closed on Wednesday due to the heavy rain warning. Similar orders have been issued by the district administrations of Cuddalore, Villupuram, and Ranipet.

Monsoon Vigil and Long-Term Concerns

Meteorologists predict that rainfall intensity will persist over the next 48 hours before tapering off gradually as the depression moves inland. The northeast monsoon, which began early this season, has been particularly active due to recurring low-pressure formations in the Bay of Bengal.

Experts warn that the frequency of extreme rainfall events has increased across southern India, likely linked to climate variability. Urban planners have reiterated the need for sustainable drainage infrastructure, particularly in Chennai and Delta districts, to prevent urban flooding.

Statewide Impact

Public transport services have been disrupted in parts of Cuddalore, Villupuram, and Puducherry, while civic authorities have deployed pumps to drain flooded streets. In Chennai, traffic diversions were enforced along Mount Road, Velachery, and T Nagar due to waterlogging.

Emergency helplines have been activated, and residents are urged to stay indoors until the weather improves. Relief camps have been set up in affected districts for displaced families.
