Karur, Tamil Nadu – September 2025 – A massive tragedy unfolded on Saturday when a stampede at actor-turned-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) rally in Karur’s Veluchamy Puram area claimed at least 29 lives, including children. Dozens of others were injured and rushed to nearby hospitals.

How the Incident Unfolded
Thousands of supporters, including women and children, gathered at the rally where Vijay, the TVK chief, was scheduled to speak. During his address, the crowd reportedly became uncontrollable, leading to panic and a stampede in which several people fainted.
Vijay had to pause his speech twice to allow ambulances to reach those who had collapsed. Police later resorted to a lathi charge to disperse the chaotic crowd.
Government Response
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin called the incident “worrying” and said he had directed:
- Health Minister Ma Subramanian
- School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh
- Senior police officials
…to reach Karur and coordinate immediate medical relief on a “war footing.”
Stalin also urged the public to cooperate with doctors and police during the emergency response.
The Bigger Picture
The Karur stampede highlights serious lapses in crowd management and safety arrangements at political rallies in Tamil Nadu. The event, part of Vijay’s growing political campaign under his TVK banner, had drawn unexpectedly high turnout, far beyond safe limits.
