Tilak Varma Illness: 2022 Scare Nearly Killed Him, Reveals Cricketer
Tilak Varma illness nearly ended the young cricketer’s life in 2022 when he was diagnosed with rhabdomyolysis, a rare medical condition that causes muscle fibers to break down rapidly and release toxins into the bloodstream. The 22-year-old said doctors warned that he could have died within hours without timely medical intervention from Mumbai Indians and Akash Ambani.
A Hidden Battle During Early Career
At the time, Tilak was fresh off his debut IPL season with Mumbai Indians, working hard to secure a spot in the Indian team. In a recent appearance on Breakfast of Champions, he revealed that he had overexerted himself in training, ignoring signs of fatigue.
“After my first IPL season, I started pushing myself even harder. I wanted to make it to the Test team and kept training without recovery. That’s when I was diagnosed with rhabdomyolysis, which leads to muscle breakdown. My nerves became stiff, and I couldn’t move properly,” he said.
Tilak admitted that he was unaware of how serious the condition was until his health began deteriorating.

Collapse During the India A Series
The frightening episode occurred during the India A series in Bangladesh. Tilak recounted how his body suddenly shut down mid-innings.
“I was batting on a good score when my fingers stopped working. My eyes filled with tears, and my arms felt like stone. I had to retire hurt. My gloves had to be cut off because I couldn’t open my fingers,” he shared.
Coaches and team doctors immediately realized something was seriously wrong and rushed him to a nearby hospital.
Mumbai Indians’ Quick Response Saved Him
When news of his illness reached Mumbai, Akash Ambani and BCCI Secretary Jay Shah acted quickly.
“Akash Ambani called Jay Shah immediately. Doctors said a few hours’ delay could have been fatal. The IV needle kept breaking because my muscles were so tight. My mother was with me through it all,” Tilak recalled.
He credited the Mumbai Indians medical team for ensuring proper care and rehabilitation. “Their support saved my life,” he added.
Recovery and Lessons Learned
The Tilak Varma illness taught the cricketer important lessons about recovery, discipline, and balance.
“Even on rest days, I would hit the gym. I thought more training meant more success. But I learned recovery is as important as hard work,” he said.
After months of physiotherapy and rest, Tilak returned to full fitness, adopting a scientific training regimen that emphasizes nutrition, sleep, and rest.
Rise to Stardom After Recovery
Tilak’s comeback has been nothing short of inspirational. His performance in IPL 2023 earned him a spot in India’s T20I squad, followed by his ODI debut later that year.
In 2025, he played a crucial role in India’s Asia Cup triumph, scoring a match-winning knock in the final against Pakistan. Fans hailed his resilience and fighting spirit, celebrating his journey from a near-death experience to cricketing glory.
“That phase made me value life more. I realized cricket is a gift — and health is the foundation,” Tilak said.
What Is Rhabdomyolysis?
Rhabdomyolysis is a rare but serious medical condition caused by the rapid breakdown of muscle tissue. This releases proteins like myoglobin into the bloodstream, which can damage kidneys and other organs.
Common causes:
- Intense exercise without rest
- Dehydration or heat stress
- Muscle trauma or infections
Doctors emphasize early diagnosis, hydration, and rest as key to recovery. If untreated, the condition can lead to kidney failure or even death.
Fans and Experts Praise His Courage
After Tilak’s revelation, fans and sports analysts praised his openness and mental strength. The Mumbai Indians franchise also posted a supportive message:
“Proud of your courage, Tilak. From fighting illness to lifting the Asia Cup — you inspire millions.”
Many young athletes have since come forward to talk about overtraining and mental pressure, crediting Tilak for spreading awareness about athlete health.
