Heartbreaking! Malayali Family Dies In Navi Mumbai Fire During Diwali Celebrations
Malayali family dies in Navi Mumbai fire, leaving the community in shock after a young couple and their six-year-old daughter perished in a tragic blaze at Raheja Residency, Vashi, on Monday night. The tragedy unfolded as the city celebrated Diwali, turning a night of lights into one of mourning.
Fire Erupts Amid Festive Celebrations
According to police reports, the fire began on the 10th floor of Raheja Residency in Vashi’s Sector 14 around midnight and quickly spread to higher levels due to thick smoke. The victims — Pooja Rajan, her husband Sundar Balakrishnan, and their daughter Vedika — were found dead in their 12th-floor apartment, unable to escape as toxic fumes engulfed the building.
Fire officials confirmed that all three victims died of smoke inhalation, and their bodies were recovered after an extensive firefighting and rescue operation.
“The fire spread rapidly through the vertical ducts, trapping residents on the upper floors,” a senior fire officer said. “By the time rescue teams reached the 12th floor, visibility was near zero.”

The Family Behind the Tragedy
Both Pooja and Sundar were professionals working in the private sector. Sundar, a software engineer, had recently been planning to launch a startup, while Pooja, a legal advisor at Spicer India, had just returned from a work trip to Hyderabad.
Their daughter Vedika, aged six, had been on school holidays and was spending time at home enjoying the festive season. The couple had been living in the apartment complex for several years and were well-known in the Malayali community of Navi Mumbai.
Neighbors described them as “friendly, ambitious, and deeply family-oriented,” often participating in community gatherings and Onam celebrations.
Grief Spreads to Kerala
The tragedy has resonated deeply in Chirayinkeezhu, a town in Thiruvananthapuram district, Kerala, where Pooja’s parents hail from. Locals remember her as the daughter of Rajan and Vijayakumari of Nandanam, Altharamoodu.
Rajan, a retired army officer, moved to Mumbai decades ago, raising his children there while maintaining close ties with Kerala. The family regularly visited during Onam and other festivals.
Relatives in Chirayinkeezhu said they were informed early Tuesday morning. “We received a call from Mumbai. We couldn’t believe it — they had just returned after the Onam holidays,” said Vijayakumari’s brother, Vikraman.
Community in Mourning
The Malayali community in Navi Mumbai gathered outside Raheja Residency and later at the Turbhe crematorium, where the final rites were performed after post-mortem examinations. Community members expressed profound grief, describing the family as “inseparable in life and united in death.”
“They worked, lived, and celebrated life together — and heartbreakingly, they left this world together,” said one family friend.
NORKA Roots, the Kerala government’s welfare agency for expatriates, issued a condolence message, calling the deaths a “painful reminder of the vulnerabilities of urban living.”
Fire Investigation Underway
Authorities are investigating the cause of the fire, though initial assessments point to an electrical short-circuit triggered by overloading during Diwali festivities. Fire safety audits have been ordered for all high-rise buildings in the area.
The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has asked housing societies to ensure fire extinguishers, alarms, and stairwell lighting systems are functioning.
“We will not take any chances,” said an NMMC official. “All buildings above 10 floors will undergo mandatory safety checks.”
Remembering the Victims
The tragedy of this Malayali family who died in the Navi Mumbai fire has left both Kerala and Maharashtra in mourning. Messages of condolence continue to pour in across social media, as friends and colleagues remember Pooja and Sundar as “kind, hardworking, and full of dreams.”
Community associations plan to organize a memorial service later this week to honor the family and offer support to their surviving relatives.
