Kurnool bus tragedy: A private bus travelling from Hyderabad to Bengaluru caught fire near Chinnatekur village in Andhra Pradesh’s Kurnool district early Friday, leaving 20 passengers dead and several others injured. The incident has sent shock waves across the state, prompting condolences from President Droupadi Murmu and Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu.
Kurnool Bus Tragedy: 20 Passengers Killed as Private Bus Catches Fire
The tragic accident occurred around 3:30 a.m. when the private bus, operated by Kaveri Travels, rammed into a motorcycle on National Highway 44 near the outskirts of Kurnool city. Police officials said the two-wheeler became lodged under the bus and struck the fuel tank, triggering an explosion that engulfed the vehicle in flames within minutes.
Kurnool District Collector Dr. A. Siri confirmed that out of the 41 passengers on board, 21 were rescued safely while 20 lost their lives. Of these, 11 victims have been identified so far. “Rescue teams responded immediately after the alert, but the fire spread rapidly,” the collector said.
Eyewitness Accounts and Rescue Operation
Locals rushed to the spot after hearing explosions and screams for help. Many passengers were asleep and could not escape as the fire spread swiftly. A few managed to break windows and jump out to safety.
Four fire engines were deployed to contain the blaze, but by the time the flames were doused, the bus was reduced to ashes. The injured were rushed to Kurnool Government General Hospital for treatment. Preliminary reports indicate that most passengers were from Hyderabad.
Among the survivors are Naveen Kumar, Akhil, Jasmitha, Akira, Ramesh, Jayasurya, Harika, Subrahmanyam, Ramireddy, Venugopal Reddy, Satyanarayana and Srilakshmi.
Government and Official Response
President Droupadi Murmu expressed deep sorrow over the incident, calling the loss of lives “deeply unfortunate” and offering condolences to bereaved families.
Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, currently in Dubai on an official visit, was briefed on the incident and immediately directed the Chief Secretary and senior officials to supervise relief operations. He ordered the best medical care for the injured and assured that the state government would provide complete financial assistance to the victims’ families.
Naidu also instructed that a thorough investigation be conducted into the cause of the fire and called for stringent measures to prevent similar tragedies.
Minister and Opposition Leaders React
State Transport Minister Mandipalli Ramprasad Reddy visited the accident site to assess the situation. He expressed anguish over the loss of lives and said that rescue and medical teams were working around the clock. “The loss of so many lives in such a tragic manner is heartbreaking,” he said.
Former Chief Minister and YSRCP President Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy also mourned the incident, calling it “deeply distressing.” He urged the government to provide adequate compensation and relief to affected families and ensure quality medical care for the injured.

Kurnool Police confirmed that the bus drivers fled the scene after the accident. A search operation has been launched to trace them, and a case has been registered.
Investigators suspect that negligent driving and fuel leakage were key factors behind the fire. Forensic teams have collected evidence from the site and are using DNA testing to identify the victims.
Officials said the bus was travelling at high speed when it hit the motorcycle, which led to the explosion. A special team is probing possible safety violations by the travel company.
