Breaking! Explosion Damages Railway Track In Assam, IED Blast Suspected

An explosion damaged a railway track in Assam late Wednesday night, briefly disrupting train services between Kokrajhar and Salakati, officials confirmed on Thursday. Authorities suspect the blast was caused by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED), prompting heightened security in the region.

Train Services Halted After Midnight Blast

According to police sources, the explosion occurred around midnight, creating a small crater on the Down line track section. The impact caused immediate suspension of train operations, forcing several passenger and freight trains to be halted at nearby stations.

“We suspect it to be an IED blast. Forensic and bomb disposal teams are at the site to determine the exact nature and origin of the explosion,” said a senior police official overseeing the investigation.

The blast site, located near the Kokrajhar–Salakati stretch in western Assam, falls under the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) division — a zone that has witnessed sporadic incidents linked to insurgent activity in past years.

Security Forces and Engineers Rush to Spot

Upon receiving reports of the explosion, railway engineers, security forces, and bomb disposal units immediately reached the area.

The affected section was cordoned off, and services on the Down line were suspended for several hours as repair crews worked to restore the damaged track.

Police teams collected shrapnel samples and debris from the scene for forensic analysis, while sniffer dogs and anti-sabotage squads conducted a thorough sweep to rule out additional explosives.

“Train movement was halted as a precautionary measure. Normal operations resumed after the damaged portion was repaired and safety checks were completed,” said a spokesperson of the Northeast Frontier Railway.

Operations Restored, Investigation Underway

By early Thursday morning, NFR officials confirmed that train services had resumed on the affected section. “The track has been restored and services are running normally,” the railway spokesperson stated, adding that patrols in the area have been intensified.

Sources said the blast caused minor structural damage to the rail track but did not affect nearby signaling equipment. However, railway authorities have instructed staff to maintain heightened alertness across sensitive locations in Assam.

Possible Insurgent Link Under Probe

Police have not ruled out the involvement of militant outfits active in the Assam–Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR). While no group has claimed responsibility yet, intelligence agencies are examining possible links to smuggling networks or local insurgent factions known to operate in the area.

“The region has a history of subversive activities, and we are investigating all angles, including an attempt to disrupt rail movement,” a senior security officer said.

The Kokrajhar district lies near the border with West Bengal and Bhutan, making it a strategic corridor for railway and freight operations in the Northeast. Authorities said they are cooperating closely with the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Assam Police’s Special Task Force (STF) for further investigation.

Past Incidents in the Region

This incident comes months after a similar low-intensity blast was reported near Goalpara in southern Assam earlier this year. While that case was attributed to local miscreants, it had prompted a comprehensive security review of railway routes through the northeastern corridor.

Security analysts note that the timing of the Kokrajhar explosion, coming just before Diwali festivities, could be intended to spread fear or disrupt regional transport.

Railway Authorities Issue Advisory

Following the IED blast suspicion, railway authorities have advised all station masters and patrolling staff in the division to conduct frequent inspections, especially during night hours. The Railway Protection Force has deployed additional patrol units along vulnerable stretches.

“Passenger safety remains our top priority. We are taking every preventive measure to ensure secure travel across Assam and adjoining northeastern states,” the NFR spokesperson added.
