New Delhi, September 2025 – A fresh controversy has erupted during the Asia Cup 2025 after Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav was fined 30% of his match fee by the ICC for his remarks following India’s win against Pakistan.
The Incident
After India’s group-stage victory over Pakistan on September 14, Suryakumar dedicated the win to the Indian Armed Forces and expressed solidarity with the families of those who lost their lives in the Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed 26 lives.
The ICC deemed his remarks as potentially “political” after a complaint was filed by the PCB (Pakistan Cricket Board). Match referee Richie Richardson held a hearing where Suryakumar pleaded not guilty, but he was advised to avoid such statements for the rest of the tournament.
BCCI’s Response
The BCCI has appealed against the ICC’s ruling, maintaining that Suryakumar’s comments were an emotional gesture rather than a political statement. The matter is now under review.

Pakistan Players Also Penalized
- Haris Rauf: Fined 30% of match fees for aggressive on-field behaviour during the Super 4s clash against India.
- Sahibzada Farhan: Escaped with just a warning after making an open-air gunshot gesture to celebrate his half-century in the same match.
A tournament source confirmed that match referee Richardson completed the hearings at the team hotel before announcing the sanctions.
Outlook
The ICC’s ruling has sparked debate, with Indian fans and the BCCI backing Suryakumar’s comments as non-political, while Pakistan’s complaint led to the disciplinary action. The appeal decision is expected soon, adding further drama to the Asia Cup 2025.
