Tension flared in West Bengal’s Purulia district after a heated confrontation between a BJP MLA and a party worker during an anti–sand mining drive late Wednesday night. Following the incident, police conducted a major crackdown and arrested 19 people allegedly involved in illegal sand extraction from local riverbeds.
🚨 Crackdown on Illegal Sand Mining
According to police sources, the arrests were made during a late-night operation near Purulia town, where officers intercepted two tractors loaded with illegally mined sand.
Suraj Sharma, a BJP worker, reportedly led a protest against the vehicles, accusing local authorities and political groups of turning a blind eye to rampant illegal sand mining in the region.
“Sand is being smuggled openly while officials look away. We want transparency,”
Sharma told local reporters before the incident escalated.
⚡ Clash Between BJP MLA and Party Worker
The situation took an unexpected turn when Purulia BJP MLA Sudip Mukherjee arrived at the local police station. Witnesses said a verbal dispute broke out between Mukherjee and Sharma over how the case was being handled.
The argument soon turned physical, according to onlookers, prompting police officers to intervene.
A video of the altercation — showing the two BJP leaders arguing and pushing each other — quickly went viral on social media, sparking outrage and embarrassment within the party’s state unit.
🧑⚖️ 19 Accused Sand Traders Arrested
In the aftermath of the clash, Purulia Police launched a wider crackdown on the illegal sand trade operating across the district’s riverbanks.
A total of 19 individuals were arrested, including suspected sand traders and transport operators.
The arrested were produced before the Purulia District Court on Friday. Officials confirmed that more raids are planned in the coming days as part of the anti-sand smuggling operation.
“We have detained 19 people so far and seized multiple vehicles involved in sand transportation. The investigation is continuing,”
a senior police officer said.
🔍 Political Fallout Within BJP
The incident has exposed growing internal rifts within the BJP’s Purulia district unit, which has been struggling with factional disputes in recent months.
Party insiders say senior BJP leaders are expected to mediate between MLA Sudip Mukherjee and worker Suraj Sharma to prevent further escalation.
“This kind of infighting hurts our credibility, especially before the next assembly polls,”
said a senior BJP functionary from Kolkata, calling for disciplinary action if necessary.

The video of the clash — widely circulated on X (formerly Twitter) and WhatsApp — has drawn sharp criticism from both the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) and citizens online.
Many questioned how party leaders could engage in public fights while accusing others of corruption.
Meanwhile, the BJP’s state spokesperson said the party “does not endorse such behaviour” and that an internal inquiry would look into the matter.
